Though they have a long usage history as a means of fooling people, e mail scams still occupy the first position in the ways of tricking people to give out their personal account information.
If you think you are secure from these mails just by avoiding replying to e mails from unknown people, think again. You should know that e mail addresses are not that hard to spoof; spoofed e mails are the ones that seem to be coming from a reliable source but are actually tricked to appear that way. We for your help bring some of the most common signs of spoof emails.
1. There is always a sense of urgency to rake an action, for ex hurry etc
2. Spoofers generally use threat as a weapon. For ex. If you decide to ignore this mail your account will be terminated.
3. There is always a link to some website along with the directions on what step to take.
4. There can be requests to enter username, passwords or any personal information.
If you come face to face with any such email then we would recommend you to ask three questions to yourselves before replying to any of these
1. Have you ever dealt with the business which is in question?
2. Is this mail directed to you or has it a generic greeting like Dear Sir?
3. Does it contain the information that company is already aware of like account number, username etc?
If you answer all of the above questions in yes, then it is highly unlikely that the email is a spoof. Most of the legitimate e mails have a phone number at the end and you can always first call and confirm. And at last please do not click on the emails from an unknown sender.
